I went on the website with a view to updating my printer driver as I could not get it to engage with my Canon Pro9000 printer. There was a live chat customer support facility which kept drawing attention to itself by making sounds on my computer, so
I engaged with it and described the problem. I was asked for my telephone number and was told an engineer would get in touch and give free advice. My telephone rang almost immediately and, after giving an explanation to the "engineer" I was told he would need to take control of my computer to rectify the problem. I expressed unease, but he said it was quite safe, and I should enter www.support.me into the address bar and hit return. This I did and got a warning that this site was not secure. I told the engineer this and he said to ignore that, so I went ahead and up came a big notice from my ISP saying this was a scam and to go no further. I told the "engineer" this had happened, and he said I should do various things, but I demurred and said I did not want to proceed. He seemed displeased and tried to persuade me to continue, but I refused and thanked him and hung up.
