It's a basic classifieds service, that lists vehicles and allows for detailed listings, and it allows auctions, but it does not provide the most basic services for auto sales: it doesn't verify that the seller is the owner of the car, nor does it
facilitate safe vehicle sales between seller and buyer, nor does it verify the buyers ability to pay. Using this site also produces no legal requirement to buy or sell a vehicle. <br />

Hemmings charges a small fee to a seller for a listing, but charges a huge fee for the buyer, should their offer or bid be accepted. <br />

The problem is the only service they provide is an advertising platform for sellers. That's it. The huge buyer fee is paid just for the option to contact the seller wit han offer. After that the seller and buyer are on their own; which leave a huge space available for seller and buyer fraud. <br />
<br />
For contrast, Autotrader has a private sales exchange built in, and they can handle title transfers and registration in most states too, all for much much smaller fees--low cost, high security, full service. <br />
<br />
Hemmings is high cost, low security, limited service, and they are not exactly clear about how limited their service is. eBay or craigslist are better tools. <br />
<br />
In my opinion Hemmings is making money purely off it's users inability to know better, and that makes them a scam.
